Ingredients:

1 cup lukewarm water

3 ½ tsp yeast

4 cups bread flour

¾ cup sugar

¾ tsp salt

2 ounces margarine

2 eggs

1 egg for the glaze

Poppy seeds (optional)

Trader Joe’s everything spice (optional)

Directions:

1.   Mix water with margarine and yeast and observe that yeast is multiplying (about 5 minutes).

2.   Add 2 beaten eggs.

3.   Add flour, sugar, salt. Make well in center of flour and add yeast mixture.

4.   Knead dough for approximately 18 minutes and place in oiled bowl. Cover.

5.   Place in warm place and let rise for about 2 hours and 40 minutes or until the dough doubles in size. Punch down. Knead light for a minute or two.

7.   Cover and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled.

8.   Brush glaze of one egg plus 1 tbps of cold water on top of braided challahs. Optional – add challah toppings (either poppy seeds or Trader Joe’s everything spice).

9.   Bake for 20 to 25 minutes at 350 degrees.
